I Am A Girl Project

Sarah – Finding Hope

Meet Sarah – Finding Hope

After surviving gender-based violence, Sarah joined BCI's skilling program and rediscovered confidence. She is now trained in hairdressing, earning income, and serving as a mentor to other girls in her community.

BCI gave me a safe space to learn, heal, and build my future. Today I feel strong, proud, and ready to help others do the same.

— Sarah, Project Beneficiary & Mentor

About the I Am A Girl Project

The "I Am A Girl" project is a dedicated response to the unique challenges faced by adolescent girls in underserved communities. We believe that biology should never be a barrier to education, and every girl deserves the opportunity to reach her full potential.

In Uganda, thousands of girls miss school every year due to lack of sanitary products, inadequate facilities, and cultural stigma. Our project addresses these barriers head-on, providing comprehensive support that keeps girls in the classroom and empowers them to become leaders in their communities.

Breaking the Cycle

In many regions, girls miss up to 20% of the school year due to lack of sanitary resources. This educational gap perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits future opportunities. Our project provides reusable hygiene kits, private sanitation facilities, and comprehensive health education to ensure every girl stays in the classroom where she belongs.

What We Provide

  • Reusable Sanitary Kits: Sustainable, eco-friendly menstrual hygiene solutions that last up to 3 years.
  • Private Sanitation Facilities: Safe, clean washrooms with running water and disposal systems.
  • Health Education: Comprehensive workshops on menstrual health, hygiene, and body awareness.
  • GBV Support: Safe spaces and counseling services for survivors of gender-based violence.

Mentorship & Voice

Beyond physical resources, we facilitate "Girl Circles"—safe spaces where young women discuss their rights, career aspirations, and leadership potential under the guidance of professional mentors. These circles create lasting support networks and empower girls to become advocates for themselves and others.

Through our mentorship program, girls are paired with successful women from various fields who provide guidance, encouragement, and real-world perspective. Many of our graduates have gone on to pursue higher education, start small businesses, and become mentors themselves.

Our Impact

Since the project's inception, we have witnessed remarkable transformations. School dropout rates among participating girls have decreased significantly, academic performance has improved, and participants report higher levels of self-esteem and confidence. Parents and community leaders have become powerful allies, helping to break down stigma and support girls' education.

How You Can Help

Your support can help us reach more girls, provide more hygiene kits, and expand our mentorship programs. Whether through financial contributions, volunteering your time as a mentor, or donating sanitary supplies, you can make a direct impact on a young woman's future.
