Meet Steven – Building Confidence

From Shy to Self-Assured: A Story of Transformation Through Mentorship

Steven - Building Confidence at BCI Uganda
Steven discovering his potential through BCI's mentorship program

Who is Steven?

Steven is a 13-year-old boy from a rural community in Nakaseke, Uganda. Like many children growing up in his village, Steven faced numerous challenges: economic hardship, limited educational resources, and the psychological burden of coming from a struggling family. Most significantly, Steven struggled with severe shyness and low self-esteem, which prevented him from fully engaging in school and social activities.

The Challenge

Before joining BCI's programs, Steven was a quiet, withdrawn child. He would sit at the back of the classroom, rarely raising his hand or participating in group activities. His teachers were concerned about his engagement, but they didn't know how to reach him. His family, though loving, had limited resources to provide the extra support Steven needed to overcome his shyness and build confidence.

A New Beginning

When Steven's school introduced BCI's mentorship and creative activities program, he was hesitant to participate. But his teachers encouraged him, and he decided to give it a try. That decision would change his life forever.

"When I first met my mentor, I was so nervous I could barely speak. But she was so kind and patient. She never forced me to do anything I wasn't ready for. She just made me feel like I mattered."

— Steven, Age 13

His Journey at BCI

Through BCI's comprehensive programs, Steven was matched with a dedicated mentor—someone who believed in him and took time to understand his strengths and challenges. His mentor introduced him to creative and practical activities, including arts, storytelling, and team projects that slowly drew him out of his shell.
